Explanation (for Instructors)
In a recent joint survey of PPW and RHET students, respondents expressed a strong desire for ethical and practical guidance on how to use AI tools in their coursework and in preparation for future professional contexts. This reflects a growing need to support students not only in avoiding misuse, but in learning to engage with AI in responsible and informed ways. In fact, teaching appropriate AI use is one of the best strategies to reduce instances of AI abuse.
This handout outlines examples of appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI at various stages of the writing process, from brainstorming through revision. It is editable, allowing you to customize it to reflect the AI use expectations specific to your course. You can share the completed version with students to clarify guidelines, or distribute the blank version as a worksheet to prompt reflection and facilitate class discussion on responsible AI use.
