
Generative AI
The following activities are designed to introduce students to generative AI writing tools. They encourage students to reflect critically on these tools to learn how to use them strategically and effectively.
Instructors are welcome to copy content directly into their CMS as is or with their own modifications. If you decide to use an activity from the resource site, please copy the student-facing content into your CMS as opposed to linking to the resource site.
Activities & Readings
- This self-directed asynchronous lesson guides students through the steps of utilizing AI as a learning and writing tool. It asks students to reflect on the affordances and constraints of the technology by asking “Can AI Teach Business Writing?”
- The point of this assignment is to experiment with AI while at the same time researching a major ethical issue that comes with using AI. Students consider various ethical drawbacks of using AI and hopefully maintain that awareness going forward to make more informed decisions on how they use AI in their everyday lives.
- In this 30-minute in-class activity, students experiment with AI as a tool for synthesizing and analyzing research.
- In this group activity, students revise a paragraph about the Blind Pig and vote on anonymous submissions, including a surprise version written by ChatGPT. The exercise encourages discussion on what makes writing engaging and the affordances and constraints of AI programs.
Ethical Alternatives to AI Assignments
- This series of assignments, originally designed for BTW 199: ATLAS Internship Success, guides students in using AI at various stages of the writing process, including brainstorming and revision. The activities promote critical reflection on the affordances, limitations, and ethical implications of AI. Each assignment also offers an alternative option for students who have ethical concerns about using generative AI.
