
BTW 261: Principles of Technical Communication
Course Description
BTW 261 is UIUC’s preeminent advanced writing course for multi-genre technical communication. The course teaches students to consider audience, context, multimodality, and the accumulation of relevant technical data to meet professional needs. More specifically, this advanced composition course focuses on the cogent, purposeful, and flexible translation of technical information for a variety of specialized and non-specialized readers.
Student Learning Outcomes
After completing BTW 261, students will be able to:
- Compose cogent written and/or multimodal technical texts to meet particular professional objectives for specialized and/or non-specialized audiences.
- Employ data and information to support recommendations to specialized and/or non-specialized audiences.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the affordances of different modes of information delivery, including written documentation, visual representation of data, and/or multimodal texts.
- Identify, locate, and/or generate information and resources to compose useful technical texts.
- Develop and utilize a recursive process of investigation, task definition, drafting, feedback, revision, and editing to compose technical texts individually and/or collaboratively.
