Library Instruction Sessions
Since many BTW courses include a research component, the PPW has developed strong partnerships with UIUC’s expert business librarians. In addition to a wide range of specialized materials and instructional resources available for your course, the business library offers library instruction sessions, where a business librarian will guide your students in effective research strategies using library resources.
Instruction Session Content
The business librarian, Carissa Phillips, will lead library instruction sessions.
In these sessions, Carissa will introduce students to business research methods, including:
- an overview of business library databases;
- discussion of what counts as “authority” when choosing business sources;
- strategies for keyword searches;
- and instruction on conducting research for the SWOT Analysis assignment
Carissa is also open to providing more individualized sessions for instructors upon request.
Schedule an Instruction Session
There are two ways to schedule a library instruction session with Carissa.
- Use this calendar link to reserve time with Carissa directly. Choose one session (30 mins) or two sessions (60 mins) depending on how long you’d like Carissa to present.
- Note: The calendar and instructions are targeting students, so the process may be a bit awkward for an instruction request. For example, the calendar indicates consultations will be held on Zoom, since that’s often preferable for student meetings. However, Carissa is happy to visit to BTW classes in-person.
- Check Carissa’s availability and then email her at choller@illinois.edu to request specific days/times, which she’ll then block out on my calendar.
- Note: Carissa’s research days are on Tuesdays, so those are consistently blocked out, but she can negotiate with an instructor to come to campus on Tuesday for their class.
