SIE for 8-Week Courses
Overview
Currently, the Program in Professional Writing (PPW) offers 1 8-week course, which runs at least once per academic year, BTW 279: Writing Job Applications! This 8-week course takes place in the second half of a semester, ideally in the Fall, and is worth 1 credit. The PPW offers 1-2 sections at a time, depending on enrollment. Since this course is only 8 weeks, it tends to be assigned on a service-in-excess basis. This course focuses on the creation of documents useful for applying for and obtaining an internship, job, or professional program in the near future.
Eligibility
To be eligible to teach this course, an instructor must have taught BTW 250 previously. Additionally, only Specialized Faculty tend to be eligible, because graduate employees are not eligible for service-in-excess and cannot be staffed at a rate greater than 67%, or 50% for international graduate employees. It would only be possible if the graduate employee completed an appointment prior to the second 8 weeks of the semester and needed an additional appointment to complete their fellowship.
Pay
This course counts as Service-in-Excess (SIE), funding code 499, indicating it’s funded by the English Department. The SIE is for $2000/month for 2 months totally $4000 (1-29-20), which is paid as a lump sum at the end of the semester or in January for the Fall semester and May for the Spring semester.
Staffing
The current staffing process for this course aligns with recent departmental staffing principles and is as follows:
- An email is sent to all eligible Specialized Faculty requesting interest.
- Arrange those who express interest in a priority list starting from those who taught the class least recently to those who taught it most recently.
- If multiple faculty interested have the same length since they last taught, whomever is most senior is listed first.
- Whoever is at the top of the list is offered the course first, and so on, until each section is staffed.
